The first phase of Hunan Science and Technology Museum was laid on February 27, 2008, and completed and opened on June 25, 2011, covering an area of 186 acres, with a total construction area of 28,113 square meters and an exhibition hall area of 14,152.3 square meters. The second phase of the project is planned to start construction in November 2023, and a new venue with a construction area of 5,392 square meters and an exhibition hall area of 1,946 square meters will be built. The second and third floors of the original Venue A will be renovated as a whole, which is expected to be completed and opened by the end of 2024.

The main building of Hunan Science and Technology Museum is in the shape of a spiral galaxy, which borrows and responds to the Chu art style represented by cirrus cloud patterns in a smooth and dynamic form, and is one of the most distinctive landmark buildings in Changsha. The main hall consists of eight exhibition areas named "Rail Transit", "Manufacturing World", "Information Harbor", "Energy World", "Earth Home", "Space Exploration", "Mathematical Enlightenment" and "Life Experience", as well as dome theater, 4D cinema, sharing hall and short-term exhibition hall. In addition, there is a Children's Hall and experimental education center, including a number of laboratories, classrooms and multi-purpose halls.

Hunan Science and Technology Museum takes science education as the main function. Through scientific, informative and interesting exhibits and exhibition-based educational activities, it integrates display and interaction, science and art, reflects scientific principles and technological applications to the public, and disseminates scientific ideas, methods and spirit. In addition, regular science experiment classes are offered to let the audience feel the charm of science at close range in practice, experience the fun of learning, improve hands-on ability, and stimulate curiosity, imagination and thirst for knowledge about science.

Since the opening in 2011, the Hunan Science and Technology Museum has maintained a permanent exhibition hall free of charge, serving nearly 10 million visitors, and building a bridge for the public in Hunan province, especially teenagers, to communicate with science and technology. At the same time, taking the lead in implementing the construction of the province's modern science and technology museum system as an opportunity, we actively promote mobile science popularization projects to sink to the grassroots level, effectively promote science and technology to help rural revitalization, and establish fair and inclusive science popularization public services.
